The challenge involved in crafting an intriguing sound landscape for a mostly homogenous ensemble became an exercise in understanding timbre and the unique characteristics of each voice. Each of the movements are played attacca, with no break between them. The opening movement is filled with action and unified rhythms that heavily contrast the second movement’s use of soloistic characters and subsets of the ensemble. The final movement abandons the clear harmonic nature of the first two movements in favor of long melodic lines and disjunct counterpoint before combining all three styles pushing towards the conclusion.
An exciting exercise for emerging string quartets.
